Located in the rolling hills of west central South Carolina Johnston was founded in 1870 when the first railroad came through. The town's business district combines contemporary convenience with turn-of-the-century charm. Gracious Southern homes of the Victorian era line the main streets.
On the fringe of the three urban areas, Johnston combines country quiet and neighborliness with access to city services. Three television channels, a cablevision service, a local Internet provider and two metropolitan newspapers serve the area. The Citizen News and the Edgefield Advertiser covers news while WKSX FM radio serves Johnston as well as Edgefield, Saluda, Aiken, Augusta, Saluda, Greenwood and Newberry. Less than an hour away, the cities of Aiken, Greenwood and Augusta offer plays, concerts - both rock and classical - and first-run movies. Johnston celebrates the impact of peaches on the area with the annual Peach Blossom Festival, held the first weekend in May.

Johnston's schools include Johnston Elementary, JET Middle School, Strom Thurmond High School and Wardlaw Academy.
Health care is also easily accessible in Johnston, with its own doctor and medical service. There is also a modern, forty-bed facility just eight miles away. The Medical College of Georgia offers a full range of medical services just 30 miles away in Augusta. In addition, a regional Military Medical Center that serves the Southeastern United States is located at nearby Fort Gordon.

Recreation
For outdoor recreation, three large lakes, Thurmond, Murray and Greenwood, are each less than an hour away. A 51-acre recreation complex is under development in Johnston, and the North Carolina mountains and South Carolina beaches are both within easy driving distance. The area is also well-known for its outstanding golf courses, including Augusta National, the site of the Masters Golf Tournament; Persimmon Hill, rated as one of the best courses in the state; and Pine Ridge Country Club. Deer, bird and turkey hunting opportunities also abound in nearby Sumter National Forest.
